The Ashkelon Desalination Plant was the first large-scale desalination facility built in Israel and remains one of the largest in the world. Producing 120 million cubic meters of desalinated water per year, the plant supplies approximately 20% of Israel’s total desalinated water — a critical resource for drinking, agriculture, and industrial use. Using state-of-the-art Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) technology, the facility converts seawater into high-quality drinking water, supplying the national water network.
Commissioned in 2005, the Ashkelon plant was the first large-scale desalination facility developed in response to Israel’s severe water shortage in the early 2000s. It was a cornerstone of the government’s strategic initiative to secure a sustainable, high-quality drinking water supply for the nation. The plant’s establishment marked a significant milestone in the desalination industry, both in Israel and globally. Keystone Water holds a 50% stake in VID, the concessionaire operating the Ashkelon plant, playing a pivotal role in strengthening Israel’s water security and ensuring long-term, reliable access to desalinated water for households, industries, and agriculture.
